Landfill Monitoring & Compliance

Hydro-GeoChemical has extensive experience in developing hydrogeological investigations for landfills to evaluate the nature and extent of groundwater and surface water contamination. Our Landfill Monitoring and Compliance Services are done professionally and up to code. All activities are performed in accordance with regulatory agency rules and regulations. Field activities typically included data/literature review; wetlands delineation; groundwater and surface water elevation monitoring, stream piezometer installation, and soil boring/monitoring well installation; and environmental sample collection and analyses (groundwater samples from monitoring and residential wells, surface water, landfill leachate, and sediment from wetlands and rivers). Created database for the landfills (chemical results), and evaluated contaminant trends using Stiff and Piper Diagrams and geochemical modeling (AquaChem). Performed risk assessments to evaluate the risk posed by the landfills to human health and the environment, evaluating contaminant trends, and preparing post-closure monitoring reports for submittal to regulatory agencies.

In addition, Hydro-GeoChemical performs landfill compliance services. Activities typically included gas landfill monitoring in accordance with the requirements of the Post-Closure Monitoring Program for the Site. Landfill gas monitoring is routinely performed with measurements taken from trench gas vents, landfill gas wells, and gas monitoring probes. At each location, landfill gas is monitored for methane percent (%) by volume, methane % lower explosive limit (LEL), % oxygen, hydrogen sulfide (parts per million [ppm]) and carbon dioxide (ppm). This information is tabulated and presented to the regulatory agency in the Annual Post-Closure Report. Landfill inspections were performed in accordance with the requirements of the Post-Closure Monitoring Program for the site, The landfill inspection included a site-walk over the entire landfill and visual inspection of site access roads, access controls (fencing/natural boundaries), drainage structures, gas vents, groundwater and gas monitoring wells, and the condition of the landfill cap (i.e., vegetative cover, erosion, settlement, burrowing animals, vandalism, etc.). During the visual inspection, photographs and narrative on the physical condition of the landfill structures were provided to document site conditions. Recommendations were made to the client for proper maintenance, if required. The information from the landfill inspection was submitted to the regulatory agency in the Annual Post-Closure Report.
